Why give?

At Citygate we believe that giving is a response to the grace of God in our lives. A transforming work of Christ in us. His grace is the action, our giving is the reaction. We give because He first gave to us and God’s generosity towards us is beyond all comprehension.

We believe that everything we have belongs to God and we are only looking after what He has given us. The Bible says: "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." (Psalm 24:1) It is with this in mind that we encourage all who call Citygate their home to give regularly and generously in proportion to their income.

The resources that are given are used to fulfil all God has given us to do. This includes funding the ministries we run at Citygate, including Alpha; Beta; students and twenties; children’s ministries; work with the poor as well as many more. It also funds the day to day running of the church including salaries and facility costs which are all required to support the continuing work of Citygate.

We receive an offering at every Sunday meeting. However, many give directly from their bank account by regular standing order. Giving in this way means that those who have responsibility for looking after the finances at Citygate have the benefit of knowing that an assured amount will be available each month. Tithing (giving 10% of our income) is a commitment that many of us at Citygate have decided to undertake.

Which account to give to?

  • General Account
We believe the Bible teaches the basic principle of tithing for all believers – the tithe being our ‘first fruits’ given for the work of the church and this being one tenth of all we receive. Whilst this is an Old Testament principle it is clear that Jesus endorsed it and challenged us to be even more generous.
Gifts received in this way are placed in the general account which is for the work and ministry of the church.

Tax efficient giving (Gift Aid)

For every £1 you give to Citygate Church, we can claim back 25p of it from HMRC. There is no lower limit on the amount that can be given, but the gift needs to be traced back to the giver, so any cash gift needs to be put in a Citygate envelope marked with your name and address, so that we can identify you as the giver.

Only those who pay tax at the basic rate or more can Gift Aid. If you are a UK taxpayer, please download and complete our Gift Aid Form and return it to the church office or place it in the offering bucket on a Sunday.
